A Double Solenoid Valve is a directional control valve equipped with two independent electromagnetic solenoid operators positioned on opposite ends of a common valve body. The internal spool is bistable and detented (or friction-held). When Solenoid 'A' receives a momentary electrical pulse, it shifts the internal spool to Position 1. The valve remains locked in Position 1 even after Solenoid 'A' is completely de-energized. The spool only shifts to Position 2 when Solenoid 'B' is energized. This provides permanent memory retention without requiring continuous electrical power.
In single solenoid valves, a power failure allows the mechanical return spring to immediately force the valve back to its default position, causing automated pneumatic cylinders to retract or extend abruptly. In industrial clamping fixtures, heavy robotic arms, welding jigs, and transfer lines, unexpected cylinder movement can drop heavy loads or crush tooling. A double solenoid valve retains its last switched state upon electrical loss, holding the pneumatic cylinder safely in position until power is restored and an explicit reverse command is sent.
Unlike single solenoid valves that draw continuous power (e.g., 5W to 12W non-stop) to maintain an active shifted state, double solenoid valves only require a brief electrical signal of 50 to 100 milliseconds to toggle positions. Once the spool has shifted, the coil is turned off. Over thousands of operating hours across large plant facilities, this reduces overall electrical consumption by more than 90% and keeps solenoid coils and surrounding pneumatic enclosures completely cool to the touch.
A 3-Port Double Solenoid Valve controls single-acting cylinder chambers or serves as a bistable 3/2 diversion valve with an inlet, outlet, and exhaust port. A 4-Port (or 5/2 Way) Double Solenoid Valve features one supply pressure port (P), two working ports (A and B), and common or dual exhaust ports (R and S). It is designed to alternately pressurize and exhaust opposite ends of double-acting pneumatic cylinders, providing fully controlled extension and retraction strokes.
A 5/2 Way double solenoid valve is a two-position bistable valve: it is always in either Position 1 or Position 2 with no middle state. A 5/3 Way double solenoid valve has three positions: it has two end positions driven by coils A and B, plus an internal dual-spring centered neutral position. When neither coil is energized, the springs return the spool to the center position (available in Closed Center to lock pistons, Exhaust Center to depressurize cylinders, or Pressure Center for balanced force).
Energizing both opposing coils at the same time creates competing electromagnetic forces, resulting in erratic spool positioning, coil overheating, or rapid thermal fuse tripping. To prevent this, PLC control programs must incorporate software interlocking that ensures Coil A cannot be commanded while Coil B is active.
