Frequently Asked Questions about Stainless Steel Double Ferrule Male Pipe Weld Connector

Answers to the questions buyers, piping engineers, and procurement teams most often ask before sourcing Stainless Steel Double Ferrule Male Pipe Weld Connector from Pioneer Industries.

A Stainless Steel Double Ferrule Male Pipe Weld Connector is an instrumentation fitting designed to transition permanently between fractional or metric tubing and nominal schedule pipe. One port features a precision-machined twin-ferrule compression tube socket, while the opposing end is a beveled or squared weld stub ready for butt-welding or socket-welding directly onto process piping, manifolds, or vessel nozzles. It is specified in severe-service petrochemical skids, offshore platforms, and high-vibration steam circuits where threaded connections cannot be tolerated due to thermal cycling, fugitive emissions risk, or regulatory prohibitions against taper threads.
Yes. Pioneer Industries strictly mandates removing the coupling nut, front ferrule, and back ferrule from the fitting body prior to welding. High heat generated during TIG (GTAW) or orbital welding conducts through the stainless steel body. If the ferrules remain inside, extreme thermal expansion can distort the internal 20° sealing cone, anneal the hardened rear ferrule colleting edge, and destroy the factory-applied silver lubricant on the internal nut threads. The nut and ferrules should be safely stored in a clean container and reassembled only after the welded body has cooled completely to ambient temperature.
Pioneer Industries manufactures male pipe weld stubs compatible with standard ASME B36.19 and ASME B36.10 schedule piping, including Schedule 40 (standard wall), Schedule 80 (extra strong), and Schedule 160 (heavy wall). The weld stub outer diameter and internal bore are precision-machined to match pipe wall dimensions, ensuring seamless root pass penetration and minimal fluid turbulence across the transition boundary.
Working pressure ratings depend on the tubing outer diameter, wall thickness, and the matching schedule pipe rating. For standard SS 316/316L tube connections from 1/4″ to 1/2″ (6 mm to 12 mm), working pressures range between 4,500 PSI and 10,000+ PSI (310 to 690 bar) at ambient temperature. Because the welded joint provides 100% joint efficiency when properly welded and inspected, the system working pressure is governed by the weaker of the tubing allowable stress (ASME B31.3) or the pipe schedule wall rating.
The fitting body acts as a thermal and mechanical buffer. Once welded and inspected, the compression tube socket allows cold installation of instrument impulse lines without hot work permits. The front ferrule creates a burnished fluid seal against the body cone, while the back ferrule grips the tube axially. This dual-ferrule action dampens line vibration and isolates mechanical piping deflections from affecting the tube-fitting seal.
Yes. Once the fitting body is welded in place, the double ferrule tube connection can be disassembled and remade repeatedly without compromising seal integrity. Ferrules swaged onto the tube end during initial pull-up retain their geometry. To remake, simply reinsert the tube assembly until the front ferrule seats firmly, hand-tighten, and advance the nut 1/12 to 1/6 of a turn with a wrench.
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) with high-purity argon shielding gas (99.995%) is recommended. For SS 316 and SS 316L fitting bodies, ER316L filler wire with controlled ferrite number (FN 4–10) should be used to prevent hot cracking. Purging the internal bore with argon is critical during root pass welding to prevent sugarization (chromium depletion oxidation) on the internal fluid wetted path.
Yes. Pioneer Industries manufactures weld connectors in dual-certified SS 316/316L, Super Duplex 2507, and Alloy 400 with solution annealing and strictly controlled bulk hardness below 22 HRC. This guarantees resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen embrittlement in upstream oil and gas production facilities handling wet H2S gas.
The weld joint can be inspected via Liquid Penetrant Examination (PT) per ASME Section V Article 6 to verify absence of surface cracks and porosity, as well as Radiographic Examination (RT) or Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) for volumetric integrity. Hydrostatic pressure proof testing at 1.5 times the design working pressure is recommended prior to commissioning.
Every consignment is supplied with an authentic EN 10204 Type 3.1 Inspection Certificate displaying chemical heat analysis, mechanical tensile and yield strength, hardness testing, PMI verification, and heat treatment lot numbers. Heat numbers are micro-etched directly onto each fitting body to preserve permanent 100% material traceability.
