Frequently Asked Questions about Compact Pneumatic Cylinders

Technical guidance, sizing insights, and engineering answers for plant engineers, machine builders, and procurement specialists sourcing pneumatic cylinders from Pioneer Industries.

A Compact Pneumatic Cylinder is a short-stroke, low-profile linear air actuator designed per ISO 21287 or UNITOP specifications. Compared to conventional ISO 15552 tie-rod cylinders, compact cylinders reduce the overall axial body length by up to 50% for identical bore diameters, making them ideal for high-density automated tooling, electronics assembly, pick-and-place fixtures, and packaging machinery where space is strictly constrained.
Pioneer supplies compact cylinders in standard bore diameters of 32 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 63 mm, 80 mm, and 100 mm. Standard stroke lengths span from 10 mm up to 80 mm in incremental steps. Custom intermediate stroke lengths and extended strokes up to 150 mm can be manufactured on demand.
Our compact cylinders feature extruded, hard-anodized seamless aluminium alloy cylinder bodies (25 µm anodic coating for maximum wear resistance), high-pressure die-cast aluminium end covers, precision ground hard-chrome-plated carbon steel or SS 304/316 piston rods, and high-performance Buna-N / Polyurethane internal lip seals.
Yes. While our standard Buna-N/PU seals are rated from 5°C to 60°C, Pioneer supplies custom high-temperature compact cylinders equipped with genuine Fluorocarbon (Viton / FKM) dynamic seals and specialized synthetic high-temperature grease rated for continuous operation up to 150°C.
Yes. All Pioneer compact cylinders come standard with an embedded permanent magnetic ring on the internal piston. The extruded aluminium profile barrel features integrated sensor slots on multiple faces that accommodate flush-mounted magnetic reed switches or solid-state PNP/NPN Hall effect sensors without requiring external mounting brackets.
Pioneer Compact Pneumatic Cylinders are rated for operating pressures between 0.5 kg/cm² and 10 kg/cm² (approx. 7 PSI to 145 PSI / 10 bar). Each cylinder undergoes a 100% factory hydrostatic and pneumatic leak test at 15 kg/cm² proof pressure.
Due to their short stroke lengths, Pioneer compact cylinders employ engineered elastomeric rubber bumper pads vulcanized directly onto both faces of the piston. These bumpers absorb kinetic energy and dampen end-of-stroke impact shock, protecting mechanical tooling and significantly lowering acoustic noise during rapid cycling.
Pioneer provides a complete range of mounting hardware including direct through-hole mounting kits, female thread end flange mounts, foot brackets (foot mounting FT), rear clevis mounts (CM), swivel flanges, and piston rod fork attachments (RK) conforming to ISO 21287 standards.
Standard single-rod compact cylinders are intended for purely axial push/pull loading. Where lateral forces or rotational deflection must be prevented, Pioneer offers guided compact cylinders with twin guide rods and an integral front tooling plate, or non-rotating hex/oval piston rod configurations.
Every production batch is tested in accordance with ISO 19973 pneumatic fluid power reliability standards and ISO 9001:2015 quality procedures. Cylinders are shipped with complete Certificate of Conformance (COC), dimensional inspection sheets, and material test certificates for alloy components.
