Description of Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinders

Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinders are the foundational workhorses of modern industrial automation. By applying compressed air alternately to the cap-end port and rod-end port, these actuators deliver reliable, controlled linear thrust in both extending and retracting directions without relying on mechanical return springs.

Engineered with heavy-duty seamless aluminium or stainless steel barrels, chrome-plated high-tensile steel piston rods, and low-friction bidirectional seals, Pioneer double-acting cylinders ensure long service intervals even under heavy side loads and high-speed cycling.

Equipped with adjustable pneumatic end-position cushioning screws at both cylinder heads, our double-acting cylinders decelerate heavy moving masses smoothly, eliminating metal-to-metal impact, mechanical vibration, and structural fatigue.

Features of Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinders:

  • Bidirectional pneumatic power delivery with equal control on both extend and retract strokes.
  • Adjustable pneumatic end-position cushioning on both front and rear covers for smooth load deceleration.
  • Wide bore diameter availability from 32 mm up to 320 mm with strokes up to 2000 mm.
  • Seamless hard-anodized aluminium barrel with mirror-smooth internal bore finish (Ra < 0.4 µm).
  • High-tensile chrome plated piston rod providing supreme corrosion and abrasion resistance.
  • Precision machined aluminium or ductile iron end caps held securely by high-strength tie-rods or profile screws.
  • Standard magnetic piston for contactless position sensing across the entire stroke range.
  • Comprehensive mounting versatility: Foot Mount, Front/Rear Flange, Clevis, and Trunnion brackets.
  • Operating pressure envelope up to 10–12 bar (145–175 PSI) with operating temperatures from -20°C to +80°C.

Frequently Asked Questions about Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinders

Technical guidance, sizing insights, and engineering answers for plant engineers, machine builders, and procurement specialists sourcing pneumatic cylinders from Pioneer Industries.

A double-acting pneumatic cylinder features two separate air ports: one at the base (cap end) and one at the front (rod end). Supplying pressurized air to the rear port extends the piston rod while exhausting air from the front port. Reversing the air supply pushes the piston backwards, retracting the rod. This dual-chamber design allows the actuator to apply active driving force and precise speed control in both directions.
Double-acting cylinders are superior when full motorized control, high stroke lengths (above 100 mm), and active pulling forces are required on the retraction stroke. Unlike single-acting cylinders where return springs decrease pushing force by up to 25% and limit overall stroke length, double-acting cylinders maintain full pneumatic power throughout the entire stroke in both directions.
As the piston nears the end of its stroke at high velocity, adjustable cushioning needles trap a small volume of exhaust air in a damping chamber. This creates a controllable pneumatic brake that decelerates the piston smoothly before it contacts the metal end covers, preventing mechanical destruction, reducing frame fatigue, and silencing operating noise.
Extension force is calculated as F_ext = P × A_piston, where P is air pressure and A_piston = (π/4) × D_bore². Retraction force is slightly lower because the rod reduces effective piston area: F_ret = P × (A_piston - A_rod). Pioneer provides exact thrust and pull sizing charts for all supply pressures from 2 to 10 bar.
We manufacture full mounting accessory packages conforming to ISO 15552: Front Flange (FF), Rear Flange (RF), Foot Mounting Brackets (FT), Swivel Clevis (CM), Center Trunnion (CT), Front/Rear Trunnion (FT/RT), and Piston Rod Fork Attachment kits (Suffix RK).
Pioneer standard strokes range from 25 mm up to 1000 mm. For long-stroke industrial conveyors, transfer tables, and furnace door actuators, we custom-build stroke lengths up to 2000 mm (2 meters) with oversized rod diameters to resist column buckling.
Yes. Pioneer cylinders are factory pre-lubricated with high-grade synthetic grease and fitted with self-lubricating polyurethane/nitrile lip seals. They are certified for clean, non-lubricated compressed air operation per ISO 8573-1 class standards, as well as lubricated air systems.
Yes. Pioneer manufactures double-ended (through-rod) double-acting cylinders where the piston rod extends from both front and rear end covers. This delivers equal thrust and speed in both directions and allows dual-side mechanical connection or external stop adjustments.
Standard cylinders feature Nitrile (NBR) and Polyurethane (PU) seals rated for -20°C to +80°C. For aggressive chemical fumes, foundry temperatures, or bakery ovens up to +150°C, we supply Viton (FKM) dynamic seals; for sub-zero cryogenic freezer tunnels down to -40°C, low-temperature NBR seals are provided.
All Pioneer cylinders are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems, 100% pressure leak-tested, and covered by our comprehensive manufacturer warranty against design or material defects.
