A Brass Compression Fitting is a mechanical flareless tube connector engineered to standards such as SAE J512, DIN 2353, and EN 1254-2. It comprises three primary components: a precision-machined brass fitting body with an internal seat taper, a brass compression nut, and a compressible brass ferrule (commonly called an 'olive'). When the compression nut is tightened onto the fitting body, it forces the olive axially into the tapered body cavity. Under this high compressive wedge load, the olive deforms plastically, biting into the outer diameter of the tube while simultaneously coining against the fitting body taper. This creates a dual metal-to-metal pressure boundary that seals fluid or gas and securely grips the tube against hydraulic blow-out without requiring soldering, welding, or tube flaring.
Our Brass Compression Fittings are engineered for seamless compatibility with soft and hard drawn copper tubing (ASTM B88 / ASTM B280), brass tubing, aluminum tubing, and thin-wall stainless steel tubing. They can also be used with flexible thermoplastic tubing—such as Nylon (Polyamide), Polyethylene (PE), and Polyurethane (PU)—when fitted with a dedicated brass internal tube support insert (tube stiffener) to prevent the flexible tube wall from collapsing inwardly during olive compression.
Depending on tube outer diameter, matching tube wall thickness, and operating temperature, Pioneer Industries’ Brass Compression Fittings are rated for working pressures up to 2,000 PSI (approx. 140 bar) in small fractional sizes (1/8″ to 1/4″), and up to 400 to 1,000 PSI (approx. 28 to 70 bar) in larger sizes (1/2″ to 1″). All compression fittings are engineered with a certified 4:1 safety factor relative to tubing burst pressures under ASME B31.3 and ASME B31.1 piping standards, ensuring leak-free performance under hydraulic impulse and mechanical vibration.
The core difference lies in the sealing geometry and preparation requirement. Unlike flare fittings (SAE 37° JIC or 45° SAE), compression fittings do not require the tube end to be expanded with a flaring tool; installation is performed on plain, straight cut tubing. Compared to high-pressure double ferrule instrumentation fittings (which utilize separate front and back ferrules for 6,000+ PSI severe chemical duty), brass compression fittings use a single symmetrical olive. This makes them significantly more cost-effective, faster to install, and ideally suited for general plumbing, HVAC refrigeration, pneumatic automation, low-to-medium pressure instrumentation, and fuel delivery lines.
We manufacture Brass Compression Fittings in fractional imperial tube sizes from 1/8″ to 1″ OD and metric tube sizes from 4 mm to 28 mm OD. Connection threads include straight UN/UNF threads on the compression nut ends, accompanied by NPT (ASME B1.20.1), BSPT / PT (ISO 7/1 taper), and BSPP / G (ISO 228/1 parallel) male and female pipe connection threads across male connectors, union elbows, tees, bulkheads, and crosses.
Yes, brass compression joints can be disassembled and remade multiple times. Because the brass olive swages permanently onto the tube during the initial make-up, the olive remains attached to the tube assembly. When remaking the connection, insert the tube assembly with the captive olive back into the fitting body until firmly bottomed, screw the nut finger-tight, and tighten with a wrench approximately 1/4 to 1/2 turn past finger-tight (or until a firm resistance is felt). If the original fitting body or olive seat has suffered mechanical damage or over-torque gouging, cutting off the swaged tube end and installing a fresh brass olive is recommended.
For a zero-leak connection: (1) Cut the tubing perfectly square using a rotary tube cutter; (2) Thoroughly deburr the inside and outside tube edges; (3) Slide the compression nut onto the tube followed by the brass olive; (4) Insert the tube into the fitting body until it bottoms completely against the internal shoulder stop; (5) Thread the nut finger-tight; (6) Using a properly sized open-end wrench, tighten the nut 1 to 1-1/4 turns past finger-tight for sizes 1/4″ and above (3/4 turn for 1/8″ to 3/16″). Over-tightening must be avoided as it can pinch or deform soft copper tubing and cause leaks.
Pioneer Industries manufactures Brass Compression Fittings from high-grade extrusion and forging brass alloys conforming to IS 319 Grade 1, BS 2874 CZ121, CW614N (CuZn39Pb3), and ASTM B16 C36000 free-machining brass, as well as forged bodies per ASTM B124 / B283 C37700. For drinking water applications, lead-free and low-lead brass alloys compliant with NSF/ANSI 372 and RoHS directives are available. Standard finish is natural golden brass, with optional electrolytic bright nickel plating (ASTM B689) or chrome plating for heightened corrosion and aesthetic protection.
In HVAC, refrigeration, and automotive fuel systems, open flame soldering or brazing presents severe fire hazards and can overheat internal refrigeration valving or sensitive control sensors. Brass compression fittings provide a 100% mechanical, cold-installed joint that eliminates the need for open flames, fluxes, or inert purging gases. Moreover, brass naturally dampens high-frequency compressor vibration, resists road salt and moisture corrosion, and does not embrittle under low-temperature refrigeration duty down to -54°C (-65°F).
